GRAND PRIZE: JAMES PURDEY & SONS 12-BORE SIDELOCK SELF-OPENER SHOTGUN ⎮The Grand Prize winner will receive a classic vintage Purdey 12-bore shotgun stocked in beautifully figured English walnut with a straight grip, point-pattern checkering and double-mullered borders. The Length of Pull is 15 1/5”, Drop at Comb 1 34”, Drop at Heel 2 1/7”, it weighs 7lbs 2oz, features double triggers, ejectors, and an Orange Silvers recoil pad.
The engraving is the classic Purdey rose & scroll engraving with “J. Purdey & Sons” marked on each lockplate and the underside of the receiver. New 30" nitro barrels were fitted by Purdey in 2005, at a cost of £15,000 ($20,000). Chambered in 2 ¾" (70mm), it is choked .010”/.018” (Improved Cylinder/Modified).
This shotgun remains in remarkably fine overall condition. The action is tight and on-face, with crisp triggers and well-timed ejectors. All oil finishes are intact and well-maintained to London standards. The barrels are in excellent condition. The original oak & leather case shows a re-lined interior in excellent condition; exterior shows age-appropriate wear.
The gun was originally made in 1924 for a Mr. Nicholas and was subsequently owned by John Kingsley Heath, one of the most respected and accomplished professional hunters in African history. Heath was the Managing Director of Kerr & Downey Safaris and played a pivotal role as wildlife manager in the filming of Hatari! starring John Wayne. He was a past chairman of the Tanzania Professional Hunters Association, and won the Shaw Hunter trophy in 1957. He held a professional hunting license for more than 40 years, finally managing photographic and bird shooting safaris. His book, Hunting the Dangerous Game of Africa is one of the seminal works on hunting in Africa.
This is a superb example of a classic game gun from the esteemed House of Purdey. Its provenance alone—having belonged to a legendary figure in the African hunting world—adds great historical significance. The modern 70mm Purdey barrels with current proofs make this an ideal renaissance gun for both use and collection.
